II Peter 3:8-15 (NIV)
But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
A THOUSAND YEARS… Our understanding of time is skewed by what we judge to be critical to our existence. Climate conversations. Energy discussions. Technology talk — all is infantile babbling without the illuminating Word of God. Peter reminds us that humans do not have the “tools” to grasp the nuts and bolts of epochs or the reason for a single second.
The Lord is not slow in his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
REPENTANCE… If you held the reins of history, would you have run out of patience with mankind by now? Most of us would have razed earth and its dysfunctional inhabitants.
Thankfully, God is in charge in 2022.
He exercises restraint, and is bound by his schematic: the Bible. What is he waiting for?
He offers every human being the opportunity to make a decision about Jesus Christ before New Earth Day comes:
Is Jesus really God? Will he give me inner peace? Is committing my future to him really the only way to receive eternal life? God gives us faith to believe when we make the decision to follow Christ.
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.
LIKE A THIEF... Those who have refused the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ will be utterly shocked at his appearance. They will feel violated, like a victim feels when a thief invades his home. On this Earth Day the proof of God’s promises will be on display as God manifests his power.
All the dirty secrets of governments and the horrors that the innocent have suffered will be “laid bare.” Like a sticky trap for flies, the acts of evil will adhere to each perpetrator forever.
Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.
You mean that our beautiful earth is not destined to be a utopian paradise ruled by tolerant, open-minded statesmen? Nope. Our beautiful mountains, oceans and skies will be “uncreated” to make way for a new breathtaking earth ruled by Christ.
But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation…
A Christ follower looks forward to the New Earth Day.
