A 5.3 magnitude earthquake rattled our windows today. This temblor was a portion of left-overs we often feel, since the destructive 7.1 shaker on November 30, 2018. It was an eerie feeling, counting the seconds while the earth grumbled under the house again.

In 2018, our 7.1, four-minute quake flung dishes and pans helter-skelter onto the floors. Canned goods toppled from pantry shelves and glass shattered everywhere. Nearly three years later, our old house still bears the testimony of havoc with hairline cracks in ceilings and walls.

Then, today, at about 10 a.m., a few miles away (and 26 miles deep), stressed earthen plates snapped together like two giant fingers, reminding us again: You are NOT in control...

We may spend years constructing a satisfying home for our beliefs. But when life’s “temblor” flings cupboards open and empties the pantry onto the floor, the frightful question may arise: “Am I just an accident, too?”

Maybe it’s time to direct that question to Someone who really knows the answer. Jesus calls himself The Way, The Truth, and The Life for good reason. He is the beyond-natural WAY to know your Creator and to learn why you were born. (John 14:6).

Life-giving, Loving, Knowable

Ask Jesus to show up in your everyday life — and speak to him like a friend. He sends peace where devastation prevails. God is the healer of havoc no matter the magnitude of your pain, and he reveals purpose to anyone who asks.

Jesus himself tells us:

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?  If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! [Matt. 7:7-11].
