God’s mercy is amazing.
But, what about consequences for our mistakes? In our world, there is no justice without “consequences.”
As an Oakland police officer, Grant is unregenerate and vengeful. Consequences from selling drugs, violence, and graft dog Grant’s steps.
In his story, 50 Rounds to Freedom, consequences catch up with Grant in a rural community far-removed from the inner city. He faces five consecutive 25-to-life sentences, plus 130 years for trying to kill police officers — and for other gun-related charges.
To this day, Grant is still in awe of God’s mercy as he tells how Jesus worked within the justice system to set him free — first from a raging suicidal life, and then from prison. God retooled his consequences to lead him to surrender his life to Jesus.
He [God] does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. Psalms 103:10 (NIV),
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone. II Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 (NIV)
